Who Has Heard of a “Two For”?
As we come to the end of the liturgical year, I am planning a “Two For”. Before we begin celebrating Advent, it is important for us to check out and understand the condition of our faith.
My Bible study on Wednesday night and the Fresh Start service will be working from the same source – “Case for Faith: A Journalist Investigates the Toughest Objections to Christianity “by Lee Strobel. We all claim to be faithful Christians, yet do we ever doubt?
The introductory blurb from the book asks these questions:
“How do you believe in a God who permits evil to happen, leaves prayers unanswered, and allows the church to engage in questionable practices? Tough questions demand convincing answers. Join Strobel as he challenges philosophers, theologians, and believers to defend their faith.”
Are you ready to defend your faith? If so, you have two options:
Join me Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. beginning September 4th and ending on November 6th. There will be a sign-up sheet in the back of the sanctuary, starting this coming Sunday, so we can order the books in time for the start date. This series will be one of the longest studies I have ever facilitated and challenging, but I am up for it, hope you are too.
Your other option is to join me on Sunday mornings at Fairview Chapel, 6802 Boyers Mill Rd., New Market, MD 21774, at 8:15 a.m. for an abbreviated version of the study. The series will start on September 1st.

New Market United Methodist Church has a small food pantry we keep stocked for those in need. We are reaching out to you asking for donations to get us through the next few months.
Some Guidelines:
Do not buy “giant size” or “bulk” of anything – they will not fit in the pantry Examples, are large packages of diapers, toilet paper or paper towels. If you buy them in bulk and the paper products are individually wrapped we can put a few out at a time. Do not get “giant” size paper towels – they take up too much room. Large cans of anything usually won’t be picked up.
Below is a list of needed items.
Laundry Detergent Dish Soap Paper Products (towels, toilet paper,, etc.) Grooming Items (Hairbrush, toothbrush, combs, etc.) Personal Hygiene (deodorant, toothpaste, , feminine hygiene pads, etc.) Health Items - band aids Pet Food Infant/Child/Elder care items - (baby diapers, Pediasure, Ensure, adult depends) Regular size canned fruit in multi packs. Ramen noodle soup packets Single serve microwave meals-multi pack -(Kraft Mac and Cheese, Dinty Moore, or Hormel products.) Meals in a can(stew, pasta, chili, hash) regular sizes sold in larger quantities. Large quantity box of breakfast bars...like Belvita, Nutri-grain of Nature Valley bars. We haven’t had them out for a while, but folks do like them. Spaghetti sauce, no glass Pasta, as long as it is not in a giant box. Canned meat, chicken, tuna, spam etc. regular size, not huge. Anything you see and know will last and not take up too much room, which will help a family in need.
Monday (9/2)- 1 Samuel 1: 4-11
What do you think is the root cause of bullying in our society? Have you ever been bullied?
How did you handle it? How would you advise a young person to deal with bullies?
Tuesday (9/3)- 1 Samuel 3: 1-10
Why did Eli, a priest, take so long to recognize that it was the Lord calling out to
Samuel? What roadblocks are in your way that might make you deaf to the call of
the Lord?
Wednesday (9/4)- 1 Samuel 8: 1-9
Why do we clamor as a nation for a leader other than the Lord? How can we avoid
this idolatry?
Thursday (9/5)- 1 Samuel 15: 10-11
Why did the Lord reject Samuel as king? If the Lord is all knowing, why did the Lord
not know about Samuel’s disobedience before the Lord made him king?
Friday (9/6)- 1 Samuel 26:1-12
David was anointed as king of the Israelites in Chapter 16, but Saul was still in
power and planning to kill David. Why do you think David did not vanquish Saul
when he had the opportunity? When have you chosen grace over revenge in
situations in your life?
Saturday (9/7)- 2 Samuel 7: 1-11
What house was the Lord promising to build for David? What descendant came from
the house of David to bring salvation to the world?
Sunday (9/8)- Worship in Person or Online.
I am so excited that we are starting up another year of helping our students within the community. Our packing will be held on Tuesday,
Sept 10th at 6:00pm in the NMUMC schoolhouse building. We look forward to seeing you there!
Blessings,
